The new Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) is about to be launched. It is a good time to try it, if you are not afraid of a few bugs. To upgrade your Ubuntu 8.10 system to 9.04 ,  follow these steps:

Step 1: This is optional, but recommended, because it reduces the risk of anything going wrong during the actual upgrade.

Enter these lines, in a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal):

sudo dpkg –configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get –fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

Step 2: Upgrade

Enter this in a terminal:

sudo update-manager -d

A window should pop up, saying:New distribution release '9.04' is available." Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions. The upgrade took about an hour on my system.
